Frequently Asked Questions

How do I get cleanup equipment?

To get free cleanup equipment for your school or community group can be found here www.bigblueoceancleanup.org/equipment-application.

What is the legal structure of Big Blue Ocean Cleanup?

Big Blue Ocean Cleanup is a non-profit limited by guarantee social enterprise. Our registration number is 122897. We have no shareholders and none of our assets can be used for private gain. 100% of the money we bring in goes back into our mission of keeping the oceans clean and to help repair ecosystems, allowing nature and people to thrive.

What do you do with the money raised from membership?

The money we raise is used to send out cleanup equipment across the globe, develop free and open source educational resources for schools, staffing costs, collect data on ocean pollution and promote awareness for clean oceans.

How do we use your education programme?

Our objective is to offer 7 to 14 year olds with an understanding of how ocean pollution impacts on the natural world and inspire them to do something about it. We have an online knowledge centre and 4 downloadable PDF’s and each topic aims to provide a basic understanding around the title theme, as well as outlining key points and how they are linked. The lesson plans are designed to have the video presented at the start of the lesson which can be found at www.bigblueoceancleanup.org/education-programme.

What do you do with the plastic you collect?

We work with recycling centres around the globe to recycle as much plastic as possible that we collect from our cleanups. We can optimise the lifespan of plastics by reusing and recycling items as many times as possible. Sorting the plastic is mainly done automatically with a manual sort to ensure all contaminates have been removed. The plastic is either melted down directly and moulded into a new shape, or shredded into flakes then melted down before being processed into granulates.
