Autumn Beach Cleanup at Newhaven

Last week, HERBOSCH-KIERE Marine Contractors Ltd (HKMC) joined forces with Newhaven Port & Properties Limited and TILT Engineering Design to carry out our autumn Big Blue Ocean Cleanup on the West Quay beach in Newhaven.

The West Quay beach is regularly maintained by the hardworking team at Newhaven Port, and this collaboration was another great example of local organisations working together to keep our coastline healthy and free from marine litter. Members of HKMC rolled up their sleeves, joined by partners and volunteers, to make a real difference.

A huge thank you also goes to the Anglers National Line Recycling Scheme (ANLRS), who once again supported the cleanup by weighing and recycling the collected waste. Their dedication ensures as much material as possible is kept out of landfill and given a new life.

Here’s the impact from the day:

  • 18.76 kg of waste removed in total

  • Rope and net: 2.03 kg

  • Lobster pot: 2.1 kg

  • Commercial plastics: 0.79 kg

  • Synthetic rubber: 1.73 kg

  • Metal/cans: 3.18 kg

  • Plastic litter: 3.85 kg

  • General litter: 4.33 kg

  • Recycling rate: 77%

Not only does this protect marine life from the dangers of entanglement and ingestion, but it also keeps Newhaven’s waterfront safe, clean, and enjoyable for the community.

We’re especially proud that this cleanup took place alongside ongoing works for the new Fishing Landing Stage, funded by Lewes District Council, which will further strengthen Newhaven’s role as a vibrant working port and community hub. 🎣⚓

Thank you to everyone who joined, contributed, and supported this effort. These collective actions show the power of partnership in tackling ocean plastic and marine waste. We look forward to our next cleanup at Newhaven as we close out this important project.

Together, we’re turning the tide.
