Community Beach Clean Helps Protect Scotland's Coastline
Volunteers in Fife recently came together to help protect Scotland's coastline and prevent litter from entering the marine environment during a community beach clean at Pathhead Sands in Kirkcaldy.
Organised by one of our official supporters Briggs Marine in partnership with Raith Rovers FC, the event brought together 12 young volunteers from the Raith Rovers Community Foundation for a morning of litter picking, learning and environmental action.
While volunteers were pleased to find relatively little litter on the beach, every item collected represented one less piece of waste that could potentially enter the sea. Removing litter before it reaches the water helps reduce the risk of plastic pollution, protects marine wildlife from entanglement and ingestion, and prevents larger items breaking down into harmful microplastics.
Supporting the event was Meg Moore from the Fife Coast & Countryside Trust, who shared valuable insight into the impact of marine litter on coastal ecosystems and wildlife. Meg also supplied litter-picking equipment, ensuring participants could safely take part while learning more about the importance of protecting our oceans and coastlines.
For many of the young volunteers, the event provided an opportunity to see first-hand how small actions can contribute to a healthier marine environment. Discussions throughout the day highlighted how plastic and other litter can travel significant distances once it enters the sea, affecting wildlife, habitats and communities far beyond the point where it was originally discarded.
Although only a modest amount of litter was collected, the event reinforced an important message: successful beach cleans are not just measured by the number of bags filled but by the awareness they create and the behaviours they inspire.
The day concluded with a football-volleyball challenge involving several Raith Rovers first-team players, including captain Scott Brown, helping to celebrate the volunteers' efforts and create a memorable experience for everyone involved.
Events like this demonstrate the value of bringing together local organisations, young people and community partners to take positive action for the environment. Every piece of litter removed from a beach is one less opportunity for plastic pollution to reach the ocean.
Briggs Marine are proud to support initiatives that help protect our marine environment and encourage greater awareness of the challenges facing our coastlines and oceans. By working together, we can all play a part in keeping plastic and other waste out of the sea and safeguarding the marine ecosystems that future generations will depend on.
